WASHINGTON (JTA) – Allen Weinstein, the U.S. national archivist, has resigned.

Weinstein, who has served in the post since February 2005, is leaving for health reasons, a statement from the National Archives said Tuesday. He has Parkinson’s disease.

During his term, Weinstein increased declassification, incorporated the Nixon Library into the archives system and, with the archives’ Canadian counterpart, established a joint Israeli-Palestinian archives preservation initiative.
