JERUSALEM (JTA) — Ehud Olmert will meet with Turkey’s prime minister to discuss progressing to direct peace talks with Syria.
The Israeli prime minister is scheduled to fly to Turkey Monday to meet with Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who has been mediating indirect talks between Israel and Syria.
According to Olmert’s media adviser, the two leaders will meet in Ankara to discuss bilateral and regional issues, including the diplomatic processes in the region.
Israeli lawmakers have said they would like to see peace talks with Syria put on hold until after a new government is formed.
Earlier this week, Syria gave to Israel via Turkey its definition of the borders of the Golan Heights for the purpose of peace talks — borders that would bring Syria to the banks of the Sea of Galilee.
Olmert on Thursday evening told the Institute for National Security Studies at Tel Aviv University that an Israeli-Syria peace treaty was still "feasible."
