(JTA) — Jewish day schools in Chicago received a bomb threat in the mail.

The letter, received Wednesday at the Chicago offices of the Associated Talmud Torahs and the Ida Crown Jewish Academy, threatened Jewish day schools in Chicago and in the suburbs, WBBM newsradio 780 reported.

The police bomb and arson squad is investigating.

Also Wednesday, the sidewalk in front of a Jewish preschool in Ventura County, Calif., was defaced with swastikas Wednesday for the third time in 2008, according to the Ventura County Star. The sheriff’s office is investigating the incident as a hate crime, according to the newspaper.

Meanwhile, the San Francisco Holocaust memorial was defaced with graffiti referring to Israel, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. It is the second time in the last few months that the memorial, which features 11 life-sized bronze figures of men, has been defaced. Earlier this year vandals drew swastikas on the figures.
