JERUSALEM (JTA) — An Israeli paratrooper who left for Gaza the morning after his wedding and was critically wounded there has left the hospital.

Second Lt. Aharon Karov, 22, was released to a rehabilitation center Tuesday, three weeks after doctors thought he would only survive for a few hours due to his injuries.

The soldier, a resident of Karnei Shomron, has already undergone several surgeries and will require plastic surgery. He still has 300 pieces of shrapnel embedded in his left arm and is not able to talk due to injuries to his oral cavity.

Doctors at Beillinson Hospital in Petah Tikvah called the soldier’s rapid recovery miraculous, Ynet reported.
