JERUSALEM (JTA) — The government of Argentina ordered a bishop who has publicly denied the Holocaust to leave the country within 10 days.
Bishop Richard Williamson was ordered Thursday by Argentina’s interior ministry to leave because he "has concealed the true motive for his stay in the country" by working for the last five years for a nongovernmental group while serving as rector of a seminary in La Reja, according to news reports.
Williamson was dismissed earlier this month as head of the seminary near Buenos Aires.
Williamson and three other excommunicated bishops, who are members of the traditionalist Society of St. Pius X, were reinstated to the Church last month by Pope Benedict XVI, sparking a furor.
In a Swedish television interview, Williamson said he believed "that the historical evidence is hugely against 6 million Jews having been deliberately gassed in gas chambers as a deliberate policy of Adolf Hitler."
