Egypt opens Rafah crossing

JERUSALEM (JTA) — Egypt has opened its Rafah crossing with Gaza to allow students, residents of other countries and medical patients to enter Egypt.

The crossing will be open for three days, Egyptian officials announced Sunday, according to reports.

Some 500 students studying abroad and 500 other people who are residents of Egypt or another country were scheduled to cross Sunday. Some 800 people requiring medical treatment will be allowed to cross Monday, an Egyptian spokesman said.

Egypt’s border with Gaza has been sealed since Hamas took control of the coastal strip in June 2007, though it has opened on occasion.
