JERUSALEM (JTA) — Israeli aircraft bombed six Gaza smuggling tunnels.

Tuesday afternoon’s attack was in response to heavy rocket attacks on southern Israel over the weekend, according to the Israel Defense Forces.

Large secondary explosions were noticeable following one of the strikes, proving the presence of weapons and munitions, according to the IDF spokesperson’s office.

Palestinian sources told Ynet that at least a dozen Palestinians were trapped in the wreckage of the tunnels. Nine have been rescued, Ynet reported, and it is unknown if the three remaining were killed.

Nearly 130 rockets and mortar shells have been fired from Gaza on Israel since the Jan. 18 cease-fire.

"As the sole authority in the Gaza Strip, Hamas bears full responsibility for all terror originating within its area of control," the spokesperson’s office said. "The IDF will continue to respond to any attempts to destabilize Israel’s South."
