JERUSALEM (JTA) — At least eight Kassam rockets were fired at southern Israel in apparent response to an Israeli air attack in central Gaza.

The Air Force struck a squad of armed Palestinian men near the security fence in the central Gaza Strip Thursday morning, according to the Israel Defense Forces spokesman. The squad was identified after firing an anti-tank missile at an Israeli patrol along the security fence. At least three of the gunmen were killed, according to reports.

At least eight rockets were fired into Israel Thursday following the operation in Gaza. No injuries or damage were reported. Islamic Jihad’s al-Quds Brigades claimed responsibility for the Kassams.

On Thursday afternoon, Israel’s Air Force bombed four smuggling tunnels on the Gaza-Egypt border. The attack was in response to the Kassams fired at Israel on Thursday, according to the IDF spokesman.

Israel’s operation Thursday morning was part of a Wednesday evening attack on a vehicle in Gaza that killed a senior commander of Islamic Jihad and a second terrorist, according to the IDF spokesperson.
