JERUSALEM (JTA) — Lebanon opened its first embassy in Syria.

Monday’s opening in the same Damascus neighborhood that is home to the U.S. embassy came five months after the neighboring countries established diplomatic ties for the first time in 60 years, since both countries gained independence from France.

Syria opened an embassy in Beirut in December but has yet to name an ambassador.

Syria withdrew its troops from Lebanon in April 2005 after three decades of dominance.
