JERUSALEM (JTA) — Sirens sounded throughout Israel as residents entered sheltered areas as part of a nationwide emergency drill.
The Turning Point 3 drill, simulating a two-front war, tested the national system of 2,300 sirens at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Citizens had been encouraged for weeks through television advertisements and direct mail to stock and enter their protected space during the test.
Siren malfunctions were reported in areas of Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, and some public shelters were not opened, according to reports.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his staff also moved to a secure room during the test. Schoolchildren throughout the country also entered shelters.
The national exercise is scheduled to continue through Thursday.
