WASHINGTON (JTA) — Israel will propose providing the United States with reports on the status of building in settlements and inviting U.S. officials to verify them.
Tensions have arisen in recent weeks between the Obama and Netanyahu administrations over verbal agreements between prior administrations that allowed Israel to continue some “natural growth” in settlements.
Obama administration officials do not recognize those agreements. Part of the problem, apparently, is that efforts by Israel to monitor growth never materialized.
JTA has learned that Israeli officials have proposed to have a system in place within weeks whereby U.S. officials would periodically receive detailed status reports and be invited to verify them.
