ROME (JTA) — Prison inmates in Poland will help clean up and maintain the nation’s Jewish cemeteries.
The Foundation for the Preservation of Jewish Heritage in Poland announced it had signed an agreement June 19 for the inmates’ work with Poland’s Central Board of Prison Service.
"Within its framework the inmates of 85 correctional facilities will help clean up Jewish cemeteries in Poland," the foundation said.
The foundation was established by the Union of Jewish Communities in Poland and the World Jewish Restitution Organization to protect and commemorate the surviving monuments of Jewish cultural heritage in Poland.
The sites of more than 1,000 Jewish cemeteries around the country are known. Only a few hundred of them still have gravestones, and many are overgrown and abandoned.
