BERLIN (JTA) – The Munich trial of alleged Nazi war criminal John Demjanjuk is set to begin in mid-October.

The German online magazine Der Spiegel reported the October trial date on Sunday.

Demanjuk, 89, is charged with being an accessory to the murder of some 27,900 Jews in the gas chambers at the Sobibor extermination camp in Poland.

The prosecution is expected to call 22 witnesses. Also, eight plaintiffs will testify against Demjanjuk, coming from the Netherlands, the United States and Germany. They include concentration camp survivors and family members who lost relatives in Sobibor.

Demanjuk, a native of Ukraine, spent most of the postwar period in the United States before being extradited to Germany in May. The retired autoworker had lived in suburban Cleveland, but was stripped of his U.S. citizenship for lying about his Nazi past.
