JERUSALEM (JTA) — Turkey has officially requested to mediate unity talks between Palestinian factions, according to reports.

Egypt has been the exclusive mediator in ongoing talks between Fatah, the ruling faction headed by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, and Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip.

Turkey made the request to Egyptian intelligence chief Omar Suleiman, the Arab news network Al-Jazeera reported Thursday.

Turkey, which reportedly wants to be more involved in the Israeli-Arab regional peace process, handled indirect peace talks between Israel and Syria until they ended at the start of Israel’s military offensive in Gaza in January.

There has been no report on Egypt’s response.
