JERUSALEM (JTA) — A soldier who allegedly stole a credit card from the Israeli army’s chief of staff was indicted by a military court.

Cpl. Louis Mascotta, 20, was indicted Sunday on charges of theft, credit card fraud and illegally removing weapons from an IDF base. He is accused of stealing the credit card number of IDF chief of staff Gabi Ashkenazi.

The accused soldier, who emigrated to Israel from Argentina in 2004, was a guard at the main Tel Aviv military base. He was assigned to the general staff area, including Ashkenazi’s office.

Ashkenazi’s credit card number, captured in a picture on the soldier’s cell phone, was given to an Israeli Arab to whom the soldier owed money. The Israeli Arab also allegedly bought the two stolen M-16 rifles and a decorative yet non-functional hand gun. About $500 was charged to the credit card.
