JERUSALEM (JTA) — Communities across Israel launched a two-day strike to protest government budget cuts.
Schools and sanitation services, as well as municipal workers in 240 local councils, began a strike Sunday to protest cuts of up to 20 percent. The cuts could mean the loss of 6,000 jobs, mostly in education.
Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and Haifa did not participate in the strike.
A protest was set to take place in Jerusalem in front of the Prime Minister’s Office. Protesters planned to tie up traffic with garbage trucks.
If the cuts are not reinstated, union officials say they will begin a general strike after the Sukkot holiday.
