JERUSALEM (JTA) — Egypt said it will ban Gaza-bound aid convoys from traveling across the country.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit made the comment Saturday to the government newspaper Al-Ahram following the departure of the Viva Palestina aid convoy led by British lawmaker George Galloway.

Abul Gheit said members of the convoy committed hostile and criminal acts in Egypt on the way to Gaza.

"Egypt will no longer allow convoys, regardless of their origin or who is organizing them, from crossing its territory," Abul Gheit said.

Galloway was deported last Friday from Egypt and declared a persona non grata.

Some 55 people were injured in clashes last week between convoy activists and police. Seven protesters were arrested.
