Democracy doesn’t permit subversiveness

To the Editor:

The execrable judgment of Im Tirtzu in its personal attack on Naomi Chazan should not obscure the facts. Democracy is a system in which citizens and their elected representatives decide how to run their state and what policies to follow. A system in which the New Israel Fund, some European governments and the Ford Foundation decide how to run Israel and what policies we should follow is not democracy.

Nobody prevents Naomi Chazan from saying what she pleases, but freedom of speech and democracy does not include the right of these organizations to fabricate evidence of war crimes and use it to incriminate their army and government. "Freedom" is not freedom for foreign governments and their agents to subvert the Israeli government and the Israeli state.
