Daroff was already a major player in the federation system as the head of the Washington office of the Jewish Federations of North America, which oversees lobbying for the hundreds of millions of federal dollars that the system to run nursing homes, start up NORCs and other projects. And now his portfolio has been expanded, after his former boss, Barry Schwarz, was let go in a series of high-level layoffs at Jewish Federations.
For starters, it means that Daroff will be reporting directly to the organization’s CEO, Jerry Silverman. And the Washington office just took on some new responsibilities that Schwarz formerly held, while commuting between Atlanta and New York.
The office will now supervise emergency response efforts and disaster preparedness — which means that Daroff is already busy handling the federations’ response to the Chile and Haiti earthquakes. And the office will now oversee the federation system’s Rabbinic Cabinet, a group with 3,000 members from across the denominational spectrum, all rabbis who donate more than $1,000 per year to the federations.
Schwarz also oversaw JFNA consulting, but that was shifted to the organization’s fund-raising department.
