To the Editor:
You write that Jewish leaders urged Vice President Biden at a meeting that the Obama administration speak directly to Israelis, presumably about the need to advance the peace process, and that there is a "consensus" among Jewish groups on this issue.
To advance peace, Israelis need to hear sincere statements of good will and reconciliation from Palestinians, not pressure in the form of more empty promises and reassurance from the White House. Israel should seek to
advance peace once it has a willing partner, not when the White House says it is time to do so.
Israeli hesitance is rooted not in miscommunication from the White House but rather Palestinian intransigence. I find it difficult to believe — and unfortunate if it is true — that a "consensus" of Jewish leaders feels otherwise.
