IDF in Haiti: It’s about morality, not self-interest

The Chief Medical Officer of the Israel Defense Forces’ field hospital in Haiti spoke this morning at the AIPAC conference, and offered a rebuke to those who had called Israel’s efforts after the Haitian earthquake as partly rooted in self-interest or good press for the Jewish state.

If it was really about self-interest, asked Col. Ariel Bar, "why would our doctors and nurses have worked around the clock until near collapse" or dug in the rubble for eight days before finding one person still alive?

All of these deeds "flow and are embedded deeply in the IDF, its core values of man and respect for each other," he said. "I stand here as an officer that is moral beyond belief and that loves each and every individual to its full extent."
