JERUSALEM (JTA) — A large group of rabbis visited the Temple Mount on the eve of Jerusalem Day.

The 43 Religious Zionist rabbis prayed at the Western Wall before ascending to the Temple Mount Monday under heavy police protection. It was the largest group of rabbis to visit the Temple Mount since 1967, according to Ynet.

Some of the high-profile rabbis who visited the site included Rabbi Dov Lior of Kiryat Arba, Rabbi Yaakov Meidan of the Har Etzion Yeshiva and National Union Knesset member Michael Ben-Ari.

It was the third year that rabbis have visited the site together in honor of Jerusalem Day. Only certain areas of the Temple Mount are permitted to be walked on, according to Jewish law.
