JERUSALEM (JTA) — An Arab resident of eastern Jerusalem was charged with agreeing to spy on Israel.

An indictment was filed Monday in Jerusalem District Court accusing Ahmad Awad, 22, of Beit Shafafa, of meeting with Hamas operatives while attending university in Cyprus, Ynet reported Monday.

Awad is accused of meeting two Hamas operatives from Gaza in 2008, who then introduced him to a third who recruited him into the Jerusalem Muslim Brotherhood; membership in the organization is forbidden by Israel’s defense minister.

According to the indictment, Awad agreed to collect information on various sites throughout Israel, and on political and social issues in the country.
