JERUSALEM (JTA) — Avigdor Lieberman will address the United Nations General Assembly.
The Israeli foreign minister will travel to New York at the end of the month to address the international body, according to Israel Hayom.
He will be addressing the General Assembly instead of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu due to the latter’s commitments to the relaunched direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians.
Lieberman reportedly canceled a scheduled trip to Washington, including a meeting with Vice President Joe Biden, in order to meet Wednesday with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton in Jerusalem.
The Clinton meeting was arranged after a request from the secretary for the meeting, at which she will reportedly try to convince Lieberman to support the peace talks, according to Yediot Achronot.
Lieberman said publicly last week that peace between Israel and the Palestinians will not be achieved in the next year, the timetable for the negotiations, or in the next generation.
