JERUSALEM (JTA) — Palestinians threw firebombs and rocks at Israeli police in eastern Jerusalem after a Palestinian man was killed by an Israeli security guard.
The guard fired at a crowd of dozens of Palestinians at 4 a.m. Wednesday after they blocked his car and threw rocks at it, police reported. The guard was hired to protect a small Jewish enclave in Silwan, according to reports.
The dead Palestinian, 32, has a criminal record and has been involved in neighborhood violence in the past, Haaretz reported.
At least two other Palestinians were injured in the incident. A police officer was injured in the aftermath. Police worked to disperse the angry Palestinian crowds using tear gas and stun grenades.
Some 300 Jewish Israelis live in Silwan amid about 55,000 Palestinians. The area has been a flashpoint for violence between Jews and Arabs.
