JERUSALEM (JTA) — The leaders of Israeli and Palestinian trade unions have agreed to meet to plan joint activity.
The heads of Israel’s Histadrut and the Palestinian General Federation of Trade Unions agreed to meet in Berlin in early December, TULIP-Trade Unions Linking Israel and Palestine, reported Wednesday on its website.
Histadrut Chairman Ofer Eini and Palestinian General Federation General Secretary Shaher Sa’ed met this week in Israel with a delegation of leaders from the International Trade Union Confederation, which will sponsor the Berlin meeting. The ITUC is the umbrella organization for trade unions worldwide, representing 175 million workers from 311 organizations in 155 countries.
The two unions agreed to draft a joint statement to promote the regional peace process.
“The program will contribute to the promotion of peace and will serve as an answer to the unions around the world that promote a boycott of Israel,” Eini said in a statement. “The aim of the projects is to promote cooperation between the unions through an understanding that the solidarity between workers on both sides will contribute to the peace process.”
Eini serves as vice president of the ITUC.
