JERUSALEM (JTA) — An Egyptian opposition leader has declared his country’s three-decades-old peace treaty with Israel is over.
Ayman Nour, the head of the secular-liberal Tomorrow Party who is planning to run for president, reportedly told Egyptian Radio Sunday that "The Camp David accord is over" and Egypt should renegotiate the accord’s terms.
His remarks follow a statement from the Egyptian military issued over the weekend saying that it would honor the peace treaty signed in 1979. Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak transferred power to the military when he resigned as president on Feb. 11.
Nour, 46, was jailed in 2005 after challenging Mubarak in presidential elections. Released from prison in 2009, he was a leader of protests in recent weeks that toppled the government and Mubarak’s 30-year-reign.
