Inaugural NYC Schlep to raise money for breast cancer research

(JTA) — The first annual NYC Schlep on July 17 seeks to raise funds for breast cancer research in Israel and the United States.

Organized by the American Friends of Rabin Medical Center, the 5K run/walk is expected to draw several hundred people to lower Manhattan, according to Joshua Plaut, the group’s executive director.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Davidoff Cancer Center at Israel’s Rabin Medical Center, and will be used to fund fellows from Israel and the United States who are researching breast cancer cures and treatments.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among Jewish women in Israel and the U.S., according to the American Friends of Rabin Medical Center. The center’s figures indicate that one in eight Jewish women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during her lifetime.

The NYC Schlep begins at 9 a.m. in Battery Park.
