Chelsea Handler and Chaz Bono
ABC announced the cast of the reality dance competition Dancing With The Stars yesterday, and along names like Ricki Lake, Ron Artest, Hope Solo and Nancy Grace, the most unusual choice was definitely Chaz Bono, Cher’s transgender son.
The controversial choice made waves and already got conservative groups outraged, but for some reason the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) was really upset with talk show host Chelsea Handler, after she made some “Chaz was a dude” jokes on her show Chelsea Lately.
Hollywood Reported quoted last night’s Chelsea’s monologue: “The Dancing with the Stars cast has been announced,” Handler joked in her opening remarks. “It includes Chaz Bono, otherwise known as Chastity Bono [laughs] before she got her penis [laughs].”
GLAAD Associate Driector of Entertainment Media, Matt Kane responded: “Last night’s episode of Chelsea Lately repeatedly made a mockery of Chaz Bono’s transgender identity when discussing the transgender advocate’s upcoming appearance on Dancing With the Stars.” He also accused her of having “transophobic humor.”
Really, GLAAD? Were you not expecting Chaz Bono jokes? To be honest, after seeing his most recent pictures, I’ll save my jokes for when he starts dancing.
