NEW YORK (JTA) – A Jewish day school in Washington has purchased a second campus for $3.9 million.
The nondenominational Jewish Primary Day School of the Nation’s Capital purchased the building about a 10-minute drive from the current campus. Proceeds from a $3 million challenge gift from an anonymous donor were used to help fund the acquisition.
The school bought the building on 16th Street NW ahead of a planned expansion. A 30 percent enrollment increase expected in the coming years would raise the student population at the school, which teaches pre-kindergarten to sixth grade, from 273 to 350.
The acquired building was built in the 1920s by Paul and Anetta Himmelfarb, Russian immigrants and the great-grandparents of Steven Himmelfarb, a current trustee of the day school.
“The house was a meeting place for the Jewish community,” said Steven Himmelfarb. “My great-grandfather and great-grandmother would smile to know this building will again be a focal point for Jewish life in the city.”
