A major kosher supermarket serving the Five Towns Jewish community closed on Thursday due to a fire, which the management described as minor. The extent of damage and the cause were not disclosed.
"Due to a minor fire Gourmet Glatt will not be open today Thursday November 3, 2011," Gourmet Glatt Emporium announced on its Facebook page. "However our staff will be working at full capacity out of Season's located at 330 Central Avenue, Lawrence."
Later in the day the page added: "The restoration and clean up process has begun and it is moving at a faster rate than expected" but in another update said "Unfortunately due to circumstances beyond our control we will not be able to open today Thursday November 3, 2011 and tomorrow Friday November 4, 2011. We apologize for the inconvenience and we recommend that just for this week you do your Shabbos shopping at Season's or Brachs." The company said the cause of the fire was still under investigation.
Thursday and Friday are the busiest days at a kosher market.
The web site FiveTowns.Info said the fire broke out about 12:30 a.m. Thursday morning in a basement kitchen and did not spread to the store upstairs because of a fire suppression system. The Lawrence-Cedarhurst Fire Department, based just down the street from the store, responded immediately and controlled the fire within an hour. The site said the store will remain closed until a fire department inspection clears it for opening.
