(JTA) — A Jewish activist in Los Angeles was killed and a local rabbi critically injured after they were hit by a car while walking home from morning prayer services.

Berrish Landau, 88, also known as Dov, and Rabbi Shmuel Jacobs were hit early Tuesday morning by a car while crossing the street in a crosswalk in front of the Bais Yehuda Shul. Landau died shortly after arriving at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where Jacobs remains in critical condition, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The driver of the car, also reportedly a member of the L.A. Orthodox community, was not arrested. His name has not been released.

Landau reportedly moved from New York to Los Angeles a decade ago.

"The driver and victims were part of a close-knit Jewish community, which has been deeply saddened by the incident," read a statement issued by the Los Angeles Police Department.
