(JTA) – Holocaust survivor Marian Turski, chairman of the Council for the Museum of the History of Polish Jews, has been awarded the prestigious French National Order of the Legion of Honor.

French Ambassador to Poland Francois Barry Delongchamps presented the award to Turski, a historian and journalist, at a ceremony Monday in Warsaw. Delongchamps said that with the bestowal of the award, France was paying homage to ”this remarkable personality of the Jewish community in Poland, a survivor of Auschwitz-Birkenau, who has led a resolute fight for the memory of the Holocaust.”

Turski, 86, was born Moshe Turbowicz in what is now Lithuania. He survived the Lodz Ghetto as well as Auschwitz, and is an active member of the International Auschwitz Council. For more than half a century, Turski has been an editor and writer at the Polish weekly Polytika.
