Washington Jewish Week owners buy the Baltimore Jewish Times

As you may recall… today was auction day to see who would end up with the Baltimore Jewish Times.

Waiting to confirm the official purchase price, but a source tells us that the bidding drove the figure up above $1.2 million.

Here’s the statement we received from one of the partners in the Washington Jewish Week (and now… Baltimore Jewish Times) ownership group:

My partners and I are very pleased with the results of today’s auction process, and look forward to prompt approval of the sale of the assets of Alter Communications to our group by the Bankruptcy Court.

As you know, Alter Communications and The Baltimore Jewish Times have a long and very respected history in the Baltimore area. The Baltimore Jewish Times is, literally, a significant communal institution, and a meaningful player in the world of Anglo-Jewish newspapers. We respect that tradition, and we are committed to continue it, and to build upon it.

We are committed to maintaining the high level of journalistic integrity of the Jewish Times. We intend to keep the paper focused on the great city of Baltimore, and its surrounding area. While we anticipate the development of some efficiencies on the administrative side of the paper, our plan is to keep as many employees of the paper who can help make it better and stronger, and to bring in additional support to help the paper continue to grow and prosper. The Jewish Times is a Baltimore-based paper, and it will remain a Baltimore-based paper.

The past many months have been a difficult time for the paper and for this community. We want to get that behind us. We have the personnel, the financial strength and the commitment to do so.

We are optimistic about the future, and look forward to celebrating the centennial of the Jewish Times in the years ahead.
