JERUSALEM (JTA) — Yigal Amir, the assassin of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, will be let out of solitary confinement after 16 years.

An Israel Prison Service committee decided Wednesday that Amir will be integrated into the general prison population.  Amir’s case is reviewed by a prison committee every six months.

He will now be allowed to watch television and to make more frequent telephone calls, according to reports.

In February, an Israeli court instructed the Prison Service to allow Amir to pray with up to three prisoners each day.

Amir has been in prison since 1995, and is serving a life sentence for the Tel Aviv murder of Rabin on Nov. 5 that year. He has been in solitary confinement the entire time because of fears that he will spread his ideology to other prisoners and that his life could be in danger from other prisoners.
