If Israel wishes to separate itself from a terrorist society and adhere to democratic principles, it is not enough to condemn the young Israelis who viciously attacked an Arab youth (“Making Coexistence A Priority,” Editorial, Aug. 24, and “Attack On Arab Youth Seen As ‘Wake-up Call,” Aug. 24). It is also necessary to promptly condemn the hundreds of bystanders — presumably many adults — who stood by and did not intervene. This is totally unacceptable and failure to do so will not serve Israel’s best interests. Government and public apathy are bigotry’s best friends.
