JERUSALEM (JTA)– A Jerusalem building committee approved the construction of more than 1,200 apartments in the Gilo neighborhood of Jerusalem.

Gilo is located in southern Jerusalem on land that Israel captured in the 1967 Six-Day War and is considered a settlement by the international community.

The approval late Monday by the Jerusalem District Planning and Building Committee comes less than a week after Israel was slammed by the international community for approving plans for building Jewish housing in other eastern Jerusalem communities. More than 4,000 housing units were approved last week for the eastern Jerusalem Jewish neighborhoods of Ramat Shlomo and Givat Hamatos.
