YOLO is one of the most popular new acronyms. The meaning of YOLO – “You Only Live Once,” which is pretty much a less sophisticated Carpe Diem, has sprung since Drake used it in his song “The Motto,” with the lyrics, “Now she want a photo, you already know, though/ You only live once: that’s the motto n***a, YOLO.”
The popular phrase has been used in more songs, tattoos, and hashtags (usually claiming you are about to do something crazy, followed by #YOLO), and recently in merchandise such as t-shirts and hats.
So what’s worse than using the term YOLO? Trying to get money by claiming you coined it, and that is what Drake is doing.
Last week, Drizzy instagramed photos from Walgreens and Macy’s and asked the stores to either cut the YOLO merchandise or cut him some checks.
Gawker’s Jordan Sargent says, “It’s unclear if Drake has a trademark for anything and/or everything YOLO or if he just expects people to send him checks when they print up clothing. Of course, he’s not the only person in the United States looking to horde all the YOLO cash to himself — there are over 100 YOLO trademark applications either live or dead in the United States for everything from cologne to dog collars (perfect stocking stuffers, if you’re running super late).”
So Drake is probably not going to get money, but it’s worth a shot, because you know, YOLO.
