(JTA) — One of Britain’s oldest synagogues will be renovated ahead of its 250th anniversary.

The Exeter Synagogue restoration is slated to begin in March and end in time for the synagogue’s anniversary ceremony in July, a spokeswoman for the synagogue told the BBC.

The roof will be replaced in a project with an estimated cost of $180,000. The spokeswoman said the money would come from fundraising and a bequest.

According to the website of the Exeter synagogue, which is approximately 150 miles west of London, the project is a “major repair and restoration programme, eliminating some of the causes of damp, and repairing parts which have been damaged or just generally deteriorated over time.”

The spokeswoman said the community has grown over the years and the building "has deteriorated with age."
