(JTA) — Ethiopian runners set records in winning the men’s and women’s divisions of the Jerusalem marathon.
Abraham Kabeto Ketla took the men’s race last Friday in a time of 2:16:29.25, while Mihiret Anamo Anotonios was first among the women in 2:47:26.40.
Some 20,000 participants from 52 nations participated in the Jerusalem Winner International Marathon. Organizers said they received 1,750 international applications.
Among the men, Luka Kipkemoi Chelimo of Kenya was second in 2:19:01.95. Third-place finisher Vincent Kiplagat Kiptoo, also of Kenya, was about a second behind his countryman.
In the women’s division, Radiya Mohammed Roba of Ethiopia was second in 3:05:58.15. Elissa Ballas, a U.S. Air Force captain and winner of the 2012 women’s Armed Forces Marathon, was third in 3:11:37.70.
The event, which was held for the third consecutive year, was promoted by the Jerusalem Development Authority.
Along with the full marathon of 26.22 miles, the day featured a half marathon (13.11 miles) and a 10K, or 6.2 miles. "Fun runs" were available for children and families.
