(JTA) — Brazil’s federation of Jewish communities will hold an essay contest named for Anne Frank.
The Jewish Confederation of Brazil, or CONIB, said this week it would fly the winner of the essay contest to Amsterdam for a visit to the Anne Frank House. The winning article, which will be announced in May, will be published in the newsletter of the Anne Frank Network, a group of five Brazilian schools.
The Anne Frank Network was created last year when CONIB took a delegation of teachers from across the country to Amsterdam for workshops with the Anne Frank House educational institute.
In Brazil, the schools, which are not Jewish institutions, started applying the Anne Frank House teaching methods and materials, “which spread the values which Anne Frank represented, serving tolerance and the fight against anti-Semitism and racism,” CONIB said.
Anne Frank was a German-born teen diarist from Amsterdam who documented her life in hiding with her family during the Holocaust until her deportation to Auschwitz. The diary she kept became an international best-seller. The house in Amsterdam where she hid is now a museum that last year drew a record 1,152,888 registered visitors.
