(JTA) — A 19-year-old male from the French city of Lyon was sentenced to 10 months in prison for smashing a glass bottle on a Jewish teenager’s head.

The assailant was sentenced last week for the March 6 attack on a 15-year-old boy aboard a bus in Ecully, a northern suburb of Lyon.

He was arrested two weeks later and admitted to committing an anti-Semitic attack, the SPCJ security unit of France’s Jewish communities said in a bulletin about recent violent attacks. The boy, described in the SPCJ report only as D., was “seriously hurt” in the attack. He required 22 stitches and a shard of glass was extracted from his neck.

The attacker, who was not named, had threatened the kippah-clad boy with a knife before the attack and said he was “part of a gang of dirty Jews,” according to the SPCJ report.

The attack was one of a dozen physical attacks on French Jews since January.
