JERUSALEM (JTA) — An Iranian general said the arms allegedly attacked by Israel in Syria were not sent by his country.
The denial appeared on the Revolutionary Guards website on Monday, the French news agency AFP reported.
“The Syrian government does not need Iran’s military aid, and these sorts of reports are propaganda and psychological war,” Brig.-Gen. Masoud Jazayeri said on the website.
The Israel Defense Forces has neither confirmed nor denied responsibility for attacks Friday and Sunday on what has been reported to be a shipment of long-range missiles from Iran en route to the terrorist group Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Syrian state media accused Israel of an early Sunday morning attack on what it identified as the Jamraya military research center located approximately 10 miles from the border with Lebanon.
Reuters cited an unnamed “Western intelligence source” who confirmed the attack and said Israel targeted stores of long-range Fateh-110 missiles. The missiles have the capacity to strike Tel Aviv from Lebanon.
Meanwhile, the Israeli daily Yediot Achronot reported Monday that Israel has sent messages to Syrian President Bashir Assad assuring him that Israel does not intend to become involved in Syria’s two-year civil war.
