Celebrity chef Paula Deen is under fire for making racist remarks that involve the use of the “N” word.
The accusations have been made against Deen and her brother, Earl “Bubba” Hiers, by Lisa Jackson, an employee from their Savannah, Georgia restaurant who is suing the pair for sexual and racial harrassment.
Among the butter enthusiast’s alleged offensive comments is one about her desire to host a true Southern plantation-style nuptials. Jackson was in charge of “food and serving arrangements” at Hier’s 2007 wedding, and when she asked Deen what type of uniforms the wait staff should wear she claims she got this response:
“Well what I would really like is a bunch of little n****** to wear long-sleeve white shirts, black shorts and black bow ties, you know in the Shirley Temple days, they used to tap dance around,” the lawsuit states. “Now that would be a true southern wedding, wouldn’t it? But we can’t do that because the media would be on me about that.”
Any Jews out there feeling left out of this one can be comforted by the knowledge that Deen is an equal opportunity (alleged) bigot. In her deposition, in which she denies the allegations, Deen was asked whether she thought making N word containing jokes might not be so nice.
“That’s kind of hard. Most — most jokes are about Jewish people, rednecks, black folks. Most jokes target — I don’t know. I didn’t make up the jokes, I don’t know,” said Deen. “They usually target, though, a group. Gays or straights, black, redneck, you know, I just don’t know — I just don’t know what to say. I can’t, myself, determine what offends another person.”
What good could come out of this mess, you might ask? No, silly–nobody has invented a time machine that can transport Deen back to the 1950s. The upside of it all is the creation of the hashtag #PaulasBestDishes, poking fun at Deen’s TV show of the same name.
While the bulk of the Tweets are specifically black-centric (think UppityNegro-side Down Cake, Lynchin’ Lemonade, Back Of Fhe Bus biscuits) there were some Jewish gems, as well. Here, our favorites.
