(JTA) — Top U.S. and Israeli officials exchanged a series of phone calls to discuss the volatile situation in Egypt.
Among the phone calls on Thursday, which followed President Obama’s news conference that night on Egypt, was one between U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Also, U.S. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel spoke with Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon, and Obama’s national security adviser, Susan Rice, spoke with her Israeli counterpart, Yaakov Amidror, Haaretz reported.
On Wednesday, the Egyptian army ousted the democratically elected president, Mohamed Morsi, following massive protests in the country.
Two days later, Islamists staged several attacks against Egyptian authorities in the Sinai, killing at least one.
