Time For Peace Talks

Ambassador Daniel Kurtzer astutely points out, “The United States has assessed this
as the time for some risk-taking for peace; Israel (and the Palestinians)
have yet to decide on their policies” (“As Egypt Roils, Time For Israel To Pursue Peace Talks,” Opinion, July 12).

For those who oppose progress on Israel-Palestinian peace talks, fearing the
emergence of a Palestinian state, the Middle East will never be quiescent
enough to resume talks. On the other hand, those who are committed to finding an accommodation between
Israelis and Palestinians ought to learn from the saying attributed to Rahm
Emanuel: “You never let a serious crisis go to waste. It’s an opportunity
to do things you think you could not do before.”
