Schechter Success In Queens

In response to Julie Wiener’s story, “New Hope for Schechter” (July 19): a lot of great things are happening at The Schechter Day School Network, including the sizable grant from Avi Chai Foundation and the arrival of incoming Executive Director Jon Mitzmacher. There was, however an omission in this story.

While it was pointed out that several Schechter schools have closed or become unaffiliated, nothing was mentioned about the Solomon Schechter School of Queens. SSSQ was the first Schechter school to be established, over 50 years ago, and it is still thriving. Enrollment has remained steady despite the difficult economic times of the past few years. In fact, a nursery class was added for fall 2013, and was immediately filled to capacity. It is also important to note that many of our graduates choose to continue their Jewish education both in high school and college.

While it cannot be denied that there are some difficulties to be faced, it is also important to recognize the successes.
