I was delighted to see your front-page story concerning Lincoln Square Synagogue’s resurgence. (“Lincoln Square’s $50 Million Gamble May Be Paying Off,” Jan. 3) A hearty “Yasher Koach” should be offered to Rabbi Shaul Robinson and the synagogue’s staff members, supporters and volunteers.
There was, however, one key omission from your story: Lincoln Square continues to have a robust Beginners program led by the ever-energetic and inspiring Rabbi Ephraim Z. Buchwald. As the founder of the Beginners program, Rabbi Buchwald has been a true pioneer in kiruv/outreach, and thousands have “returned” because of his efforts. Full confession, by the way, my wife and I graduated years ago from the Beginners program, and Rabbi Buchwald changed our lives. We are also proud supporters of the National Jewish Outreach Program, which he heads.
After more than 30 years, Rabbi Buchwald continues to inspire, and those seeking the shul’s wonderful resources should know he is very much a part of the new Lincoln Square Synagogue.
