BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (JTA) — Pope Francis will meet in Rome with an Argentine Jewish delegation.
Sixteen Jewish leaders and rabbis are scheduled to meet Thursday with the pope, the former Buenos Aires Archbishop Jorge Bergoglio. The delegation includes Julio Schlosser, president of the Jewish political umbrella in Argentina, DAIA; Claudio Epelman, executive director of the Latin American Jewish Congress; and Claudio Avruj, president of the Holocaust Museum of Buenos Aires.
“I will thank him for the letter he sent at the 20th anniversary of the museum and his permanent remembering of the Shoah,” Avruj, who also serves as undersecretary of Human Rights in the Buenos Aires city government, told JTA.
The gathering was organized by the Latin American Jewish Congress and Rabbi Abraham Skorka, the rector of the Latin American Rabbinical Seminary.
“I will thank him for his remarks against anti-Semitism and for his fight against any type of discrimination,” DAIA Vice President Waldo Wolff told JTA.
The delegation also includes rabbis who are working in interreligious dialogue throughout Argentina.
The pope is scheduled to visit Israel in May.
