JERUSALEM (JTA) — Two Palestinians were executed by Hamas in the Gaza Strip for spying for Israel.
The men “provided the Occupation [Israel] with information that led to the martyrdom of citizens,” the Hamas Interior Ministry said in a statement, Reuters reported. The information concerned “resistance workshops and tunnels,” the Palestinian Maan news agency reported.
The men had been collaborating with Israel for nine years, according to the statement.
Under Palestinian law, collaboration with Israel is punishable by death, according to AFP.
One man was executed by firing squad, and the other was hanged.
The Fatah party of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and Hamas recently signed a unity agreement.
